Wymondham High Academy Community Allotment
On Wednesday 15th November, WHACA (Wymondham High Academy Community Allotment) had their third visit from Matt Willer and the Papillon Project. The allotment is coming on brilliantly, now with a clearly marked out border in the form of a pallet fence that the group has made and painted. We have 2 large rainbow beds around the edge, 3 large beds in the middle and three new smaller raised beds. We also have tractor tyre beds and have used some old filing cabinets for further planters. We have enjoyed learning how to use recycled materials to help create the space, whilst helping the environment.
Around the edge of the new fence, we took the opportunity of using Matt’s expertise to help us plant a foraging hedge made up of over 200 saplings. These saplings were supplied by The Woodland Trust made up of different fruit trees, so we will have plenty of fresh fruit in the years to come. It is very exciting to see how our legacy will grow into the future.
After our Halloween bake sale, where we raised over £400, we have enough money to buy a polytunnel. This would not be possible without the support of other staff and students, and some generous donations from the Margaret Reeve foundation and the Friends of WHA. We hope to have the polytunnel up before Christmas ready for Spring planting.
Not only do we have an amazing new space that will grow produce for us to use in school, we have a fantastic team that have worked tirelessly to make it happen. The allotment champions have learned so much, and grown in confidence over the months. Thank you for allowing them out of lessons. Thank you also to everyone who has helped, including the site team and the canteen staff.
More to come before Christmas!
