Wymondham High Academy

Homework

Our aim at Wymondham High Academy is to provide an exceptional curriculum for all students; a curriculum which brings out the very best in the children and prepares them for success in all areas of life.   We want a curriculum that is ambitious and engaging where our students accept responsibility, demonstrate determination and act with humility in all aspects of their lives.

From our parent feedback, we know you are interested to find out what your child will be learning each half term and we have designed the brief summary sheets on our website to support you with this. Here is the link: https://www.wymondhamhigh.co.uk/Curriculum/Curriculum-Journey/
We also provide a fortnightly ‘Spotlight into our classrooms’ feature in our school newsletter to support with clear communications with parents around our curriculum.

We have redesigned our approach to homework based on student, teacher and parental feedback.

Our approach:

  • The purpose of homework is to consolidate knowledge learnt in lessons.

  • Homework is based on knowledge organisers/revision guides/ online platforms (SPARX, Kerboodle, GCSEPod, Carousel).
  • Homework is set on the first lesson of a Week 1 for the week/fortnight ahead.  Homework is set via planners.

  • Quizzing will be used in lessons to check understanding and learning.  Quizzing will be used to link homework and class learning.

  • Departments will decide the best method of feedback to the students on their homework but students show evidence in lesson via their homework exercise book.  Misconceptions will be addressed in lessons.

  • In Year 7 to support with the transition to High School, only Maths and English homework will be set for the first half term.

  • In Year 7&8, English, Maths and science department will set one task per week  (No more than 30 mins).  All other subjects will set one task per fortnight in Year 7&8
    (No more than 30 mins)
  • In Year 9, English, Maths and science department will set one task per week (No more than 45 mins).  All other subjects will set one task per fortnight in Year 9
    (No more than 45 mins)
  • In Year 10&11, English, Maths and science department will set one task per week (No more than 60 mins).  All other subjects will set one task per fortnight in Year 10&11.
    (No more than 60 mins)

Homework Support:

All students are expected to spend the required amount of time completing all homework set and we use praise in lessons to recognize all students who are meeting our expectations with homework.

We ask that parents have positive conversations with their child about the homework being set and when deadlines are so students can complete homework without the pressure of trying to complete too many pieces at once and cramming homework at the last minute. We offer a suggested homework timetable to support this.

Year 7:
Homework until Oct half term is Maths and English only.

We recognise the importance of homework to embed the learning in lessons and help students to develop effective study skills that will support them as they approach their exams. Therefore, any student who is not completing homework is missing out on the essential benefits homework provides and needs support and guidance that homework support club can offer. Parents will be kept updated on homework via the MyChildAtSchool App and each half term a summary will provided to parents detailing homework.

Homework Club:

We are delighted to remind you of our new Homework Club at Wymondham High. Our dedicated Teaching Assistants (TAs) will be available to support students with their homework and study needs.
When? Monday to Thursday 3:10 PM to 4 PM
Where? N9 - Computer Room
This is a fantastic opportunity for students to receive extra help, complete their tasks, and improve their understanding of various subjects. Our TAs are here to provide guidance, answer questions, and ensure that every student has the resources they need to succeed.
We encourage all students to take advantage of this valuable resource. Whether you need help with a tricky maths problem, guidance on revision, or just a quiet place to study, the Homework Club is here for you.

Year 7 and 8 Knowledge Organisers:
Research evidence indicates that regular recall activities, known as retrieval practice, are an effective way of ensuring that knowledge is committed to long-term memory.
At the start of each term, all Year 7 and 8s will receive a knowledge organiser booklet that contains content for all subject areas, including facts, dates, characters, quotes, precise definitions, and important vocabulary. They will use these knowledge organisers in lessons, in tutor time, and during homework tasks.
An important aspect of their homework will be to use the knowledge organisers for self-quizzing. If this core knowledge is secured, they will be in a strong position to use and apply this knowledge in a range of contexts in your lessons.
We will use quizzing in lessons to support their self-quizzing and teachers will use this information to adapt teaching to support students. Regular quizzing checks have a number of benefits:

  • It helps your teachers to identify what you remember and what you need more practice on.
  • To help build your confidence and practice in preparation for assessments and examinations
  • And repeated retrieval and practice strengthens your memory and helps you remember more over a period of time.
