Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity – Level 3
Course Information
A wide range of centre assessed units with practical and wider project-based assessment opportunities, as well as examined units on the body systems and the long and short term impacts of sport and physical activity; how sport is organised and the purpose of sports development; health and safety requirements in sport and physical activity; the purpose of, and how to conduct research in sport and physical activity; and how businesses in sport are organised and what success looks like to them.
Career opportunities
This course can lead into a wide range of career pathways. Students have followed their interest in sport by choosing university courses such as Sports Studies, Sports Science, Coaching, Teaching, Physiotherapy and Equine Science. Some have moved straight into jobs in the leisure and recreation industry or into the public services.
Entry requirements
A pathway 5 in GCSE PE would be of benefit, or an equivalent grade in science. Students should have a keen interest in Sport Science, Coaching and Development, with any experience in these areas being a great benefit.
Course Specification
The course is made up of 360 teaching hours, the same as A Level.
It has 3 mandatory units that will be examined externally (240 hours):
• Body Systems and the Effects of Physical Activity
• Sports Coaching and Activity Leadership
• Sports Organisation and Development
The remaining hours will be made up from a series of optional units, examined by course tutors, which may include:
• Nutrition and Diet for Sport and Exercise
• Sport and Exercise Psychology
• Sport and Exercise Sociology
• Biomechanics and Movement Analysis
