My DofE Story by Hannah
‘I don't think I could ever have imagined how far I'd come with the DofE when I signed up for Bronze almost 4 years ago. There was a time I didn't know that I'd even complete Bronze, and a time I thought we might be lost in the mountains of Scotland forever on expedition! But I've been so incredibly lucky and, with the support and encouragement every step of the way from Mr Michie and the DofE volunteers, I've gone from a girl who never spoke to anyone at school to a UK Youth Ambassador sharing my opinions with UK politicians, international emerging leaders and even royalty; not only that but they're listening!
My Duke of Edinburgh award with Wymondham High was definitely the best experience I have ever had and I'll never forget my expeditions or the incredible people I've met along the way. I've tried so many new things and even attempted my first 10 km run through DofE recently. I still get so excited to help out on expeditions and I love having the chance to help others access the opportunities I've had and listen to their stories.
I hope to continue this in my new role as one of 35 UK Youth Ambassadors for the Award. I've already had the opportunity to speak at party conferences on issues including the importance of youth enrichment and spoke with Rachel de Souza (Children's Commissioner) on the need for a more skills, employment focused education model. This week I met with Prince Edward (the Duke of Edinburgh) at St. James's Palace to discuss measures to improve accessibility to the award, as well as meeting international representatives; which was not only an opportunity to practice my foreign languages but also to collaborate on the UN sustainability goals and the future of youth organisations.
I might be shy, but finally people are starting to take notice and youth voices are being heard. I'm so grateful for the chance and for those who've believed in me and got me to this point. I hope many others will thrive through this scheme. It just starts by saying yes! Believe in yourself and set your own goals - you never know where they might lead you...’
